Devices were created by several manufacturers to simulate this interface via USB to control a Canon camera's focus, recording and other settings. Up until the 5D Mark IV the USB interface was the same and consisted of a USB 2.0 plug on the camera.<br />
<br />
With the 5D Mark IV Canon has upgraded to USB 3. I have confirmed that these devices do in fact work with the 5D Mark IV just as they have with the previous bodies.<br />
<br />
USB Follow Focus devices include the Okii Follow Focus <a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/854219-REG/Okii_FC1_FC1_USB_Focus_Controller.html" target="_blank">Okii Systems FC1 USB Focus Controller</a> and the <a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/853877-REG/Manfrotto_SYMPLA_MVR911ECCN_Clamp_On_Remote_Control_for.html" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1a5888; display: inline-block; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Manfrotto MVR911ECCN</a> . I was able to control the 5D MK IV with both of these devices. For the Manfrotto you will need to buy one of these <a href="https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030302&p_id=3896&seq=1&format=2" target="_blank">USB A to mini-B 5pin</a> and one of these <a href="https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=362" target="_blank">USB 2.0 A Female to A Female Coupler Adapter</a><br />
<br />
While the 5D Mark IV has superb AF, being able to control it manually may still be desired as well as being able to start/stop video recording. These devices work great when attached to stabilization devices such as the Movi.<br />

One of the ends would refuse to loosen when you loosened the knob. After two attempts, one of which involved taking the entire thing apart, I was able to fix it. I had over-tightened the knob causing one of the 2 sections inside the arm to slide and push a hole right through the washer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0yOY997ZFBtBQ9VstnZJNgFBibpOP5JIdc8Agk3WJ8ZjjPexIAGWESLA96ieTEF9zwaavEnwLj9Ds1tma-TH__ToGNIjneQsyae16PwZ95C3p8SNhglsE4Q-i4HNpKk_MUjHTonYXDBc/s1600/TY6A2001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0yOY997ZFBtBQ9VstnZJNgFBibpOP5JIdc8Agk3WJ8ZjjPexIAGWESLA96ieTEF9zwaavEnwLj9Ds1tma-TH__ToGNIjneQsyae16PwZ95C3p8SNhglsE4Q-i4HNpKk_MUjHTonYXDBc/s320/TY6A2001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the arm completely disassembled laid out in order of how it would be reassembled.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoan9wR2oRRMClWywCwB9BzAX9Afw7MfFiMk_rtuBl8mtGI6n1R5kxFX5NcVIIyn6tTsi0XhHOr2y9VN0OBPVvHdVyS0WkfLyMdOfEEf4yCV6ZaO9Z3VAJlw_6OOWJ-lEUauFDgGc66yU/s1600/TY6A2003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoan9wR2oRRMClWywCwB9BzAX9Afw7MfFiMk_rtuBl8mtGI6n1R5kxFX5NcVIIyn6tTsi0XhHOr2y9VN0OBPVvHdVyS0WkfLyMdOfEEf4yCV6ZaO9Z3VAJlw_6OOWJ-lEUauFDgGc66yU/s320/TY6A2003.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the washer that I pushed a new hole through. The smaller piece was wedged inside one of the two arm sections as you can see in the first photo.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5ClVhSqHL1fpuZ_f2VWGHDFux-gzqb2PZclQjdqjkyomkw7u7F3qO5ZU5I1bhsX-88-4NNhWqWMdmPtxMWIgavmMAXj3HgJPxgKg1HXnEoX-N1j9WVTZbPfhVEeXTRprXBKvk-n_ux8Q/s1600/TY6A2006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5ClVhSqHL1fpuZ_f2VWGHDFux-gzqb2PZclQjdqjkyomkw7u7F3qO5ZU5I1bhsX-88-4NNhWqWMdmPtxMWIgavmMAXj3HgJPxgKg1HXnEoX-N1j9WVTZbPfhVEeXTRprXBKvk-n_ux8Q/s320/TY6A2006.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here it is reassembled with out the small hole piece. I might try to get Manfrotto to send me a new orange washer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The metal piece that sits inside the knuckle has a indentation in it to hold the ball bearing. When you tighten the arm, you cause the bearing to move up out of the indentation putting pressure on the long pin and the piece at the end which puts pressure on the ball. If the part in the nuckle doesn't go back out, then the arm will fail to work as it had for me.</div>

Installing it at home on my machine running Windows 8.1 with AMD Radeon HD 6950 I was hoping to see how the new GPU performance would perform. Unfortunately the GPU was failing to initialize properly.<br />
<br />
After talking to a friend, who also had a much older AMD /ATI video card, I soon discovered that the 14.4 driver works just fine with Lightroom 6/CC but, the 14.9, 14.12 and beta do not.<br />
<br />
If you want to use acceleration, and you do because its nice, you'll need to revert back to this older driver.<br />
<br />
Why they release a product that only works with a year old video driver, I do not know.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">Just to be clear the following DO NOT WORK.</span><br />
<a href="http://www2.ati.com/drivers/amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-with-dotnet45-win8.1-64bit.exe"><span style="color: red;">http://www2.ati.com/drivers/amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-with-dotnet45-win8.1-64bit.exe</span></a><br />

<br />
<span style="color: #6aa84f;">But this one</span><br />
<a href="http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous/detail?os=Windows%208.1%20-%2064&rev=14.4"><span style="color: #6aa84f;">http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous/detail?os=Windows%208.1%20-%2064&rev=14.4</span></a><br />
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #6aa84f;">does work.</span>Nicolashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02081237269328629513noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5014127188017711584.post-87862886391219764552012-01-11T22:19:00.000-08:002012-01-12T10:14:07.930-08:003D Mic Pro, Zoom H4N and recording volume.<div><br />
</div>I have been learning to use the <a href="http://www.3dmicpro.com/" target="_blank">3D Mic Pro</a>, together with my Zoom H4N to record sound whenever I film. I been learning how to properly set the volume level for the recorder in louder environments. Below is some of my findings when recording loud sources, or close to loud sources.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 16pt; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Scenario 1</span></div><div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">The following set of audio files was recorded using my Zoom H4N and the 3D Mic Pro. The 4CH005M track was the built in audio recorder microphones. The 4CH005I track is the input from the 3D Mic. The 3D Mic was connected using the XLR inputs. The tracks were recorded simultaneously. The Zoom H4N mics were set to a recording level above 20. The 3D Mic recording level was set to 0.5</div><div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">The recording is of Christmas Bells. The Christmas bells are electronically controlled but contain mechanical mechanism that causes them to ring. The bells start up playing the scale up and down. The bells were strung along an archway. The 3D Mic Pro was mounted right above the Zoom H4N. Both were centered between 2 to 3 feet below the bells.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I recommend right click and save to play.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: 15px;"><a href="http://ntbone.homeip.net/public_html/3DMicRecordings/4CH005I.wav" target="_blank">4CH005I.wav</a></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><a href="http://ntbone.homeip.net/public_html/3DMicRecordings/4CH005M.wav" target="_blank">4CH005M.wav</a></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: 15px;"><br />

I wanted to see how a variable ND filter would perform, specifically on my 10mm-22mm Canon lens.<br />
<br />
The following test was performed at 10 mm using a continuous florescent light source. Min and Max refer to the markings on the filter, which did correspond closely to the lightest and darkest settings. At 10mm the filter has significant pattern issues on the dark end.<br />

This software lets you remotely shoot from a computer. It also allows you to view Live View via a computer.<br />
<br />
I tested this out on my old laptop, and the performance was quite poor. The frames per second (FPS) was barely usable. I was still considering this as an option for a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #6aa84f;">Video Monitor</span>, but need to confirm what sort of netbook/laptop will be required to provide enough performance to make this viable. I performed tests on several of the PC's I have around the house with the following results<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #6aa84f;">Intel Core I7</span> - More then capable of handling the video feed. See the following belo</li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #6aa84f;">Intel Core 2 Duo</span> - Handles the FPS fine, but the CPU is running high at 70 to 80.</li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f1c232;">Pentium 4 3 Ghz</span> - Frame rate was quite a bit lower. CPU still not capped.</li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;">Pentium M 1.8 Ghz</span> - Frame rate significantly too low.</li>
</ul><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='388' height='690' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/u-wJDFj9JGQ?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>So it is possible to get a good frame rate and very little delay from a usb remote connection, however I have not yet determined if a netbook is capable of a useable FPS. (I do not own a netbook).<br />
<br />
All tests were done with a 31 foot in total length USB cable run. I had to use a repeater<br />
<a href="http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030312&p_id=2779&seq=1&format=2">USB Active Extension/Repeater Cable</a> and then a 15 foot Male to Mini-B 5Pin cable to get the length.<br />
<a href="http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030302&p_id=5450&seq=1&format=2">15 foot Male to Mini-B 5 Pin Cable</a>. The repeater is important as USB only supports a maximum of 16 feet without one. See this video for more information<br />

I evaluated each of the applications.<br />
<br />
All of my research was performed on a Core I7 930 (2.8GHZ) with 12 GB of ram running Windows 7 x64. The PC runs 3 monitors powered by dual ATI Radeon 4850's.<br />
<br />
This will be the first part in a series of posts following the comparison.<br />
<br />
Below is a video demonstrating seeking performance of Canon 7D videos on<br />

The following video demonstrates the problem.</div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/PVj7RQKkh6s?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<br />
I have reinstalled my PC, using the latest video drivers and even tried to simulate a solid state disk for the hard drive (via a RAM Disk). While the RAM disk helped the tearing problem was still there. Wish I had a fix for this. It makes scrolling through my pictures quite painful.Nicolashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02081237269328629513noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5014127188017711584.post-53456117992768744882011-01-21T01:22:00.000-08:002011-02-27T00:41:02.670-08:00Pinnacle Studio 14 and the Canon 7DI have owned both Pinnacle Studio 14, and the Canon 7D for almost a year. Several months ago, I was creating videos from time lapse captures I made with a webcam. The captures were only 640x480. During the creation of these time lapse videos (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO-dvDwjL-I">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO-dvDwjL-I</a>), I began to notice a problem with Pinnacle.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f1c232; font-size: large;"><b>Standard Defintion</b></span><br />
<br />
My video source was progressive (non-interlaced) content. The output video I was getting from Pinnacle was horribly pixelated. The title had jagged edges to it and the video quality was horrible. After contacting tech-support and trying out all sorts of options with the options dialogs<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqs4OpaIZPJlGic7u6n8rb8QKO6jL5j4hFN20OnmodkE9ggxXLOGvO5njoZbiO5dKzmdcg5rFwVUzyV9WfiflO9ZmjE0wAhLGpZoe0JeCz3rV2r1LwYwbEvDD9K1rTsY52QzwOqbFt4pY/s1600/Pinnacle+Project+Preferences+Standard.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqs4OpaIZPJlGic7u6n8rb8QKO6jL5j4hFN20OnmodkE9ggxXLOGvO5njoZbiO5dKzmdcg5rFwVUzyV9WfiflO9ZmjE0wAhLGpZoe0JeCz3rV2r1LwYwbEvDD9K1rTsY52QzwOqbFt4pY/s1600/Pinnacle+Project+Preferences+Standard.png" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeizXuG6URDXHwe5QPeSSA9IlkLzeCtGP7JV5Flt1HSJG-4KNBUXRYNEiahqknzHFAa16uQ7Uk3ksiHvTOF2v39OTpnm7MW-LK9cEm2zrfzHsiEbE01c43PzBNw8YVlh2Xk6p_S5OpcLY/s1600/Pinnacle+Video+and+Audio+Preferences.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeizXuG6URDXHwe5QPeSSA9IlkLzeCtGP7JV5Flt1HSJG-4KNBUXRYNEiahqknzHFAa16uQ7Uk3ksiHvTOF2v39OTpnm7MW-LK9cEm2zrfzHsiEbE01c43PzBNw8YVlh2Xk6p_S5OpcLY/s1600/Pinnacle+Video+and+Audio+Preferences.png" /></a></div>I learned that in order to get smooth output, I needed to make sure that the codec for background rendering was set to DV. My output was smooth again.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: large;"><b>High Definition</b></span><br />
Time passes and I think all is well. Just recently I notice the same sort of jagged interlacing artifacts in some of my high-definition videos. I try to perform the same settings as shown above for my high definition content, though I have the video set to "Set from first clip added to project". I notice that no matter what I do, I can never get the <i>background rendering codec</i> to use DV. the <b style="font-style: italic;">"Current" </b>codec is always set to <b><i>MPEG-2.</i></b><br />
<b><i><br />
</i></b><br />
I then analyze all my projects that I created, and the video output I produced. I noticed 2 things.<br />
<ol><li>When I import a Canon 7D video, shot at <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3d85c6;">1920x1080x30p</span></b> and I have the <i>Project Format</i> set to <i>"Set from first clip added to project"</i> that the <i><b>Current</b></i> format that is shown is <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">1920x1080x60i</span></b> (1920 x 1080, 29.97 frames/sec 16:9, interlaced). Pinnacle Studio sees my <b>progressive</b> content as <b>interlaced.</b> I have imported the files into other packages (Sony Vegas, EDIUS and a few others) and all they show the video as being progressive. The camera is supposed to record in progressive.</li>
<li>If I set the format as follows<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHmHqfNq_xVzIIz3nDX-fQ9hBgR9ojXt_SJ40H46ERGXS0V_IFDnSZwQy9TtC26MzV43whgkkNc1WW_jvQcsX60vRI8jpxgfB9yh4rNgTDGzGb1AkNqWHsOKcfPY9n3pIz7RuJQMC_J2U/s1600/Pinnacle+Project+Preferences.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHmHqfNq_xVzIIz3nDX-fQ9hBgR9ojXt_SJ40H46ERGXS0V_IFDnSZwQy9TtC26MzV43whgkkNc1WW_jvQcsX60vRI8jpxgfB9yh4rNgTDGzGb1AkNqWHsOKcfPY9n3pIz7RuJQMC_J2U/s1600/Pinnacle+Project+Preferences.png" style="cursor: move;" /></a><br />
the title sequence is no longer appearing interlaced, pixelated and is nice and smooth.</li>
</ol><div>I performed all my analysis using uncompressed AVI output to ensure that the output format and compression was not affecting my analysis.</div><div><br />
</div><div>I examine what I thought was the fixed video, but then a little bit after the title sequence was gone, especially where diagonal lines run, that the jagged pixelated look is still there. Examining the footage I realized the interlaced/pixelated/jagged part was only fixed for the portion of the clip that was re-rendered with the title. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Realizing, that re-rendering the video is what removes the interlaced/jagged artifacts, I then added a the RGB colorizer filter (changing no settings) to all the clips. This removed the interlaced artifacts from the video. Unfortunately this change significantly increases the processing time required to work with the video. I also noticed some sections, particularly in the dark areas still look pixelated. <b><i>I have found no good solution for this.</i></b></div><div><b><i><br />
</i></b><br />
In attempting to generate the sample pictures for this blog, I ran in to some interesting problems and difficulties reproducing the bug. I had to turn off background rendering to get the AVI's to successful export and was not able to get one of them to work reproduce. There still seems to be a element of randomness to whether Pinnacle will produce blocky interlaced/jaggy output or not.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Conclusion</b></span><br />
I am still experiencing flakiness in reproducing this bug. Too much really seems to depend on those project settings and how they are set up. If you look at them wrong, you may or may not get output with interlaced/jagged/pixelated results. You could open a project one day and it works, and the next time you open it to output its back.<br />
<br />
I have decided to seek out better more reliable software. It is quite unfortunate as I really liked the easy of use, and the included transitions/titling effects of Pinnacle's product. The software also had a good set of predefined output formats to choose from that was straight forward.<br />
<br />

If you have Pinnacle Studio 14, and you use it to create videos, please check your footage for these unfortunate artifacts. If you see them as well, please leave comments below.<br />
